The Russian Iconettes
The second of these images was Puneet. When I finished it with its formal pose and layers of patterns, I realised it was reminiscent of Russian icons. Off I went to the library and spend an afternoon looking at books of Russian icons. They are so interesting with the faces and hands quite defined and 3 dimensional and the rest of the bodies flattened out with large patterns. That subject matter was, of course, all sacred. I decided to try a Madonna.
I printed these three women on brushed aluminum. The colours shimmer and glisten as the pieces sway in natural light.
